Men’s Skincare
An effective skin care routine used to be the sole domain of women. The idea of skin care for men used to be a quick shave, splashing the face with water and a dab of aftershave. However, in recent years more and more men have become aware of the benefits of looking after their skin and there have been more products introduced to help men look after their skin. We have developed a brief overview to some key components that should be involved in an effective male skin care routine.
Face Wash
This should be the first port of call as part of most men’s grooming habits. They work to clean the skin and remove any grime and grease.
An effective face wash should be used every day twice a day. It will set a good base for the following steps.
Exfoliator or Scrub
This is a key element of a grooming routine. A scrub will exfoliate the skin to remove any old skin and dig out the more stubborn grease and grime. Maintaining an exfoliator into the skin care routine will ensure that the freshest and healthiest layer is always visible and means you will always be looking your best. It will also reduce the potential for getting spots or in growing hairs.
You should only need to exfoliate twice a week. A good quality scrub will not need to be applied too vigorously as they will have a good level of ingredients that will work hard for you.
Moisturiser
A good quality moisturiser will work to keep men’s skin moisture balance at good levels. As well as that, they can maintain a youth full and healthy complexion. It is probably the single most important element in a skin care routine.
There are moisturisers that have been formulated for many different types of men’s skin. It is not just those that suffer from dry skin that benefit. All skin types can benefit from a reduction is grease and oils that can cause spots. Moisturisers can also reduce dryness and even help reduce the potential for lines and wrinkles.
It is sensible to apply both in the morning and at night. It can be worth applying to the neck as well as the face.
Balm
Traditionally, aftershaves were developed to apply to the fish after shaving. However, they are full of alcohol which drys out the skin and they are extremely uncomfortable to apply. The good news is that a more modern alternative was developed in the form of a balm. The main purpose of a balm is to soothe and moisturise post shave.
Shaving can be potentially harsh on the skin which is why it is vital to provide as much post care as you can. A balm should be applied immediately post shave across the face and neck.
Skin Toner
As men’s skin care products have developed, the more niche areas that were previously only used by women have been developed for men. The latest of these are skin toners. They are often a simple liquid that will tone the skin. They can also work to close pores on the face. A good time to apply is after shaving or towards the end of your skin care routine.
Face Mask
Not the most attractive of face care products, but one of the most effective. They work to get deeper into the skin and are a worthwhile addition to your program.
Face masks will cleanse by reducing oil in the skin and working on the pores and also rehydrate your skin. They only need to be used once a week.
Eye Cream
The area of skin around your eyes is the most sensitive on your face. Because of this, there have been special products developed to work on this extra sensitive skin to reduce bags, lines and dark circles.
A small amount of cream should be added to the eye skin once a day. Caution should be taking when applying due to the sensitive nature of the skin.
Creams for Anti Ageing
Another thread to the bow of the male skin care routine is the anti ageing product. They have been specially formulated to combat the lines, bags, wrinkles and other signs of ageing.
A good time to apply these creams is just before bed.
Sun Cream
The sun can cause serious and permanent damage to the skin. Because of this, it is essential to always wear a sun cream when going out into the sun. This can also be in the winter if it is a particularly sunny day.
