The Best Diet for Your Skin
There is a huge connection between what we eat and the quality of our skin. A quality diet that contains all of the right foods can work to maintain a healthy, bright and youthful complexion. The best thing to aim for is to add foods in your diet that are rich in vitamins, minerals and anti oxidants.
Its not just the food, what you are drinking is just as important. A key element of a healthy male skincare diet is lots of water. This will ensure you are fully hydrated and will have a positive effect on your skin. It is suggested that we should aim for 2 litres of water a day. This water can come out of your food as well. As long as your diet consists of lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, then you should aim to drink about 1.5 litres of water per day.
What to eat?
The first area to cover is protein. Protein is a key ingredient in the diet to help maintain a toned and elastic skin. The best proteins are low in fat such as fish and seafood.
A recent buzz word in the world of nutrition is anti oxidants. These are contained in many types of foods that fall into the grouping known as ‘super foods’. Anti oxidants are a great tool to battle free radicals which can be a contributor towards ageing as well as playing a part in many cancers. Super foods that contain free radicals can include blueberries, raspberries, spinach, kale and broccoli. Out of all of the super foods, blueberries contain the most free radicals.
The amount of carbohydrates that you consume should also be reviewed. While, they play an important part in the diet feeding our muscles with energy, too much carbs can be a bad thing. They stimulate the production of insulin which can damage the skin. Carbohydrates with a low GI should be chosen. These are ‘slow release’ carbs that don’t give such spike in insulin levels. Low GI carbohydrates include brown rice and pasta.
Processed foods, sweets and fizzy drinks should all be avoided. This is because they contain high levels of sugar which can have a negative effect on the skin.
We have been conditioned to believe that all fat is bad for us, however, this is not the case. There are many good fats that naturally occur in oily fish, nuts and seeds. These are known as essential fatty acids. The most famous of these is Omega 3. This can be great for your skin and general health.
By having a healthy diet, it will take the pressure off of your skin care routine and the combination of the two will ensure great looking skin for many years to come.
